A New Broadcasting Strategy with Supporting VCR Functions for Near Video-on-Demand Systems

چکیده
This paper proposes a new video-on-demand (VOD) broadcasting strategy . In our approach, film S is divided into n equal parts and played through k channels. The user simultaneously downloads the film segments from k channels into the set-top-box (STB) and plays them according to their order. The initial p segments in the programmed film will not have fast-forwarding capabilities. With respect to films available on the market, commercials and statements of copyright will always appear in the initial parts. Of course, in view of the providers’ business considerations, not wanting the front parts of the film to be skipped but to be watched is a logical assumption. Every time the user wants to initiate d times fastforwarding, according to our broadcasting strategy, the segments saved in the user’s STB and those that are being continuously downloaded from k channels will be sufficient to provide the user with the portions of the film needed when fast-forwarding is initiated. As such the broadcasting strategy we have proposed not only allows the user to pause and rewind, but also to fast-forward.

Providing VCR Functionality in Staggered Video Broadcasting
A true video-on-demand(TVOD) system lets users view any video program, at any time, and perform any VCR functions, but its peruser video delivery cost is too expensive. A near video-on-demand(NVOD) is a more scalable approach by batching multiple clients to a shared stream or broadcasting videos. Staggered video broadcasting, one of NVOD techniques, broadcasts multiple streams of the same video...
متن کاملA Broadcasting Strategy for Interactive Video-on-Demand Services
In this paper, we employ the approach of linear programming to propose a new interactive broadcast method. In our method, a film S is divided into n equal parts and broadcast via k channels. The user simultaneously downloads these segments from k channels into the user’s set-top-box (STB) and plays them in order. Our method assumes that the initial p segments will not have fast-forwarding capab...
متن کاملA Broadcasting Protocol for Interactive Video-on-Demand Services
This work presents a broadcasting protocol for interactive video-on-demand service. The proposed broadcasting allows the user to play the video-cassette-recorder (VCR) functions which includes the limited fast-forwarding capability. Consider a film S is divided into n equal parts {S1, S2, ..., Sn} and played through k channels. The user simultaneously downloads the film segments from k channels...
متن کاملSingle-Channel Data Broadcasting under Small Waiting Latency
Due to the advancement of network technology, video-on-demand (VoD) services are growing in popularity. However, individual stream allocation for client requests easily causes a VoD system overload; when its network and disk bandwidth cannot match client growth. This study thus presents a fundamentally different approach by focusing solely on a class of applications identified as latency tolera...
متن کاملA Scalable Technique for VCR-Like Interactions in Video-on-Demand Applications
In video-on-demand (VOD) applications, it is desirable to provide the user with the video-cassette-recorder-like (VCR) capabilities such as fast-forwarding a video or jumping to a specific frame. We address this issue in the broadcast framework, where each video is broadcast repeatedly on the network. Existing techniques rely on data prefetching as the mechanism to provide this functionality. T...
